About Flowers

Tips to make your flowers last longer

  • Keep your flowers in a cool place (65-70 degrees), away from direct sunlight, heat vents, or other heat sources.
  • Vase arrangement - make sure they have plenty of water.  If the water becomes cloudy, completely change the water and cut 1/2" off the stems with a sharp knife (not scissors).
  • Centerpiece or other arrangement that is designed in floral foam - you need to add water daily to prevent the foam from drying out.
  • Flowers in a box, or in tissue - remove any water tubes that are on the flowers, as well as any leaves that will fall below the water line.  With a sharp knife, cut 1/2" off the stem and place in a vase of warm (but not hot) water.

How to care for your planter
  • Planters typically arrive with a few fresh cut flowers in them. These flowers are in plastic tubes filled with water.  These tubes should be checked daily and refilled as neede - especially roses.
  • Choose a location with moderate, but not direct sunlight.
  • Plants like moderate temperatures 65-75 degrees.
  • Allow soil to become dry to the touch, then water thoroughly. Do not over-water or let plants sit in standing water.
  • Fertilize as directed on your fertilizer container.

What the Color of a Rose Symbolizes

Red - universally symbolic of deep feelings of romance and love. The red rose's current meaning comes from a deep-seated history, beginning centuries ago when the color red - the color of blood - was symbolic of life. This evolved to stand for strong emotion, and in Greek and Roman cultures, the red rose was associated with the Goddess of Love. The red rose has become the perfect way to say, "I love you."

Pink - pink is perfect to show a crush how you feel, or a loved one how you appreciate them. Pink roses also convey poise and elegance. Nowadays, different shades of pink also carry different meanings: dark pink symbolizes gratitude and appreciation, while light pink expresses admiration.

Yellow - a yellow rose indicates friendship.

Orange - Bright and energetic, orange roses stand for enthusiasm and desire. As a literal mix between yellow and red (friendship and love), the fiery color has come to represent passion, perhaps moving a "just friends" relationship toward romance.

White - as you might guess, white roses are symbolic of purity and innocence. They are known as the bridal flower, a representation of new and pristine love. White roses also express honor and reverence, therefore appropriate for memorials or at a funeral.

Purple (lavender) - purple roses are often symbolic of enchantment and love at first sight. They are also closely associated with royalty, and therefore can have a majestic meaning.

Green -  a green rose has many meanings.  It is the color of harmony, opulence, tranquility, and fertility. Green roses can symbolize best wishes for a prosperous new life, or wishes for a speedy recovery.
